Miss Bee's Last Question for a While

Hey there prairie brides!

Today's question is kind of a deviation from usual. It's going to be about weddings but not really. Here goes the preamble.

Unfortunately, at the moment Miss Charlie and I are super busy (I have three jobs on top of a writing career, an encroaching trip to Scotland with my man and a very empty fridge; Charlie is scouring the seven seas for employment and trying to hone her craft of being awesome).

So, we are going on a brief hiatus! We'll be back sometime (no ETA).

BUT, should you still want to submit something to us (photography, vendors, etc), feel free, and we will get it up ASAP. Right now it seems like we are doing a lot of filler with very few subs, but hopefully we will come back with crazy awesome ideas, and most of all, time.

So here's my last question for a while:

Will You Miss LBP?

A Picture Says A Thousand Words--A Photo booth Says More

This is a trend that I feel is an amazing idea, wedding or any other kind of event you plan on running. Especially if you're going for the vintage/nostalgia feel that really gets your guests going and ramp up the excitement! Are you ready?! Get ready!

Now you're like "Oh my God, what is she talking about?" Well, c'mon. PHOTO BOOTHS of course! And now I hear you groaning, again (kind of like I was while researching this) "But there's nooo onnneeee in Winnipeg who rents them out, so stop teasing me with awesomeness!" Well prairie peeps, we were all wrong!

Why, you are asking, would I want this monstrosity at my fancy wedding? Well here are a couple of reasons that may convince you to get outside of your tulle encrusted box (taken from the PBROW site):

  • It's Unique! You'll be amazed at the buzz that's created once your guests see the booth.
  • It's Fun! You'll get pictures of your friends & family that you would never get otherwise. No-one can resist hamming it up, once the red light comes on!
  • Photo strips are wonderful mementos for you or your guests. You and your guests will enjoy having your picture taken on original film that will last a lifetime. Add a scrapbook for a truly treasured keepsake!
But that's not all! This company has AUTHENTIC, vintage photo booths available to rent (from the 50s and 60s . . . yes, in working condition!) So if you're still in it for the vintage, this is as close as it gets! Not only will they supply the booth, but props as well should you choose the Photo Pavilion (which lots and lots of swingin' couples are). And if Vintage isn't your thing, don't worry, they have New Generation, full colour photo booths in addition to black/white or green/white.

Aren't you pumped?! I am! I've been looking around for a company that does this in Winnipeg for a while, ever since seeing such successful and epic wedding photo booths on Rock n Roll Bride or Green Wedding Shoes. Really gals, I know you're already hiring a fancy photographer, but now you can let your guests in on the fun, not just your bridal party! It'll also be something epic your guests will be talking about years after the wedding. Who doesn't want that? Visit their site for rental info and what's included in your rental package!

Miss Bee's Birds and/or Bees Question

Yes, I made a funny with that subject line. TRA LA LA!

Oh prairie brides, I miss the days when you'd actually contribute to my questions! So I guess I'm going to have to get a little more racy in order to light things up around here. Today I leave this one open ended, and I especially invite the ensuing stories. This one kind of interests me and I want to hear your opinions/tales!

Are you gonna DO IT on your wedding night?

Now it may sound like an obvious question, but let's think of it rationally: by the time everything wraps up (if you're like me) it's going to be 4 am. You've probably been awake since 5 am the previous day because, let's face it, you were dying from the butterflies/excitement/nervousness. Wow lady, that's nearly 24 hours! AND you've been dancing for the last 6, talking to every single guest the last 10, and you've probably been doing it all in heels. Oh you super woman!

And when you finally get home, very close to passing out, you realize you still have to consummate the marriage (let's also face it: in this day and age you've probably been consummating it for a while . . .) but seriously. Would you be too exhausted, or would you pound back three Red Bulls and jump on it for the sake of your own private ceremony? Or are you gonna save it all for the honeymoon when you've finally recuperated?

Dish dish dish! C'mon guys, work with a curious gal!

Go Green or Go Home

Spring has finally arrived! . . .  well, it's trying to, anyway. Even in Toronto. Right now the wind is howling, the rain is pattering, but there are still wild flowers bursting out of the decayed foliage all around my neighbourhood. And there are definitely tulips on my window sill. So needless to say, I'm kind of in a green mood! And no, this has nothing to do with the Canadian election, so save 'dem jokes!

$4.85 from Green Party Goods
Like I mentioned in my post on Winnipeg's Botanical Paperworks, leaving as little environmental footprint as possible post-wedding has become a trend. (I'm definitely giving away little trees as wedding favours when my big day happens, MARK MY WORDS!) So with this in mind, I give you Green Party Supplies. Yes, I realize they do focus a little more on birthday party type gatherings, but I'd like to point you towards things like their bambooware, cupcake stands, and even lanterns. From decor to tableware to gift boxes, they've got you covered.

Take a peek and join the wave of green-eyed enviro brides!

Your Day, Your Way . . . With STYLE!

All right, so you're a bride who wants everything. Unfortunately, this often means you have to go EVERYWHERE and consult EVERYONE to get said EVERYTHING. It's pretty unwieldy, which I'm sure you're beginning to understand after following this blog. And you shouldn't have to compromise just because you're getting a headache. This is why today I present to you a one stop solution.

You want the destination wedding? Check. You want the event entirely coordinated? Check. You want unique invitations, an epic ceremony, and maybe even a custom wedding website? Do I have to say check another hundred times? Didn't think so!

Now I'm sure you're looking at me and going, "Oh yeah, right. In WINNIPEG?" Look at me with doubt again. Now smile, because you're wrong.

"

So this means you can Travel in Style, or if you're staying in Winnipeg you can have your Event With Style, and don't forget to Design With Style, which includes invitations, paper luminaries, or if you want to set up a Wed-Site! It's all here for you. Did I mention they also have a team of wedding commissioners to help you plan the ceremony down to a T specifically to your . . . you guessed it, style?

What else can I say about these guys, aside from the fact that you MUST follow them on Twitter/give them a ring? I know that when it comes down to my own special day, I'll definitely be calling on them to take care of all the hairy details, big or small!

Miss Bee's Big Attendant Question

So we here at LBP are all for going against the grain, for doing things that no one else expects all for the sake of you having an amazing day. Today's question falls under this umbrella of win.

Would you have a Maid or Man of Honour? A Best Lady over a Best Man?

It's that simple! Why let gender roles dictate who's at your side to support you when the big day comes? I mean, what if your best friend was from the opposite sex? What if you wanted them to be there for you in lieu of asking a girl/guy friend who you really haven't had much to do with through your formative years?

I do realize, however, that there can still be a bit of tension here if say, the bride had a really boisterous partier for a 'Man of Honour' who was more interested in getting to the open bar than picking through tulle. Or if the Best Lady is really flirty and expected to be at the Groom's beck and call when he needs a hand. Breaking tradition can get tricky.

So, would you? Wouldn't you? If not, why? Shout it out!

Dress That Man Up

Now, I know we go to great lengths to show you all the prettiest dresses the world has ever seen (well why not? They're so SHINY!!) But today I'm taking one for the guys! Want to look dashing and debonair on your wedding? Look no further than the next shop I'm about to take you through.

Oscar de la Renta. Neil Allyn. Perry Ellis.  Fubu. Geoffrey Beene. These are just a few of the brand names that you'll find here. Whether you're looking to rent or to purchase, they've got you covered from tophat to tails. Shoes, ties, and any other accessories are also extremely accessible at Aldo, as well as custom tailored pieces made to fit your body type and style. Check out their Rental Page for examples of their delicious wares! Everything from classic black tux with bowtie to three piece white number, varied collar cuts and oooh, wow, looking at suits is just as addictive as looking at dresses. I just keep picturing my boyfriend in all of these SULTRY NUMBERS. Whew. <Fans self>

Oh man, I'm particularly loving the red and black one here. Or the pinstripe ensemble! I'm definitely a little nutty. But on this one, I think I'll let the man decide. It's his day too, and he's going to be probably just as stressed out and nervewracked as the bride, so him being comfortable and at ease in what he's wearing is key. Just as long as he's not wearing something out of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. SHUDDER.

So grooms, groomsmen, and little-boy-ring-bearers, take note! Aldo has everything for you. Don't forget to browse their selection of vests/waistcoats, shoes, ties, and more. Don't worry, they've even got shirts. You're set!

Where Every Bead is a Gem

Today I'd like to focus on personality - that little dash of you that every bride or groom wants to sprinkle on their wedding. And it's only fair! It is, after all, your wedding. So duh, why not?

Beyond the food, music, clothing or flowers, there is a small but very significant way to put your own spin on things--the wedding jewelry. No, I'm not talking about the ring! I'm talking about everything else that's shiny and wonderful in the ceremony.  So let's get started. From turquoise to jade to lapis, these three sisters have you covered--and gleaming.

Taken from their About Us page:

Turquoise
"We are three sisters wild about beads! Being surrounded by so many men: husbands, seven sons between us and four brothers to boot, beading lets us get in touch with our feminine side as well as strengthen our sister bond!

We’ve been creating out of our homes for five years, searching high and low for the best beads. We began travelling to find the best beads in the world. China, Thailand, Mexico and even in our own beautiful Canadian backyard, we have found some exceptional products that we wish to share with you."

Jade
Looking for custom jewelry for you and your bridal party? Or maybe a special gift for your mother and soon-to-be mother in law? Look no further ladies. Not only do these spectacular sisters offer custom jewelry consultations, they also offer parties and workshops. Imagine hunkering down with your bridal party for a relaxing night where you all design the bracelets and pendants you're going to wear on the day! It'd certainly be a nice reprieve from running around and hoping the bride doesn't explode on everyone from wedding-stress. (Eeek) And should beading really take your fancy, you can even come back to work on your project in the studio. Click here for class info!
Lapis lazuil

If you're already a savvy beader, never fear. Poco also sells the beautiful beads I'm sure you're drooling at, which opens up realms of creative possibilities. Semi precious stones, swarovski, fresh water pearls, to tools and giftware, they've got your back. Give 'em a call today!

Miss Bee's Big Name Question

Today's question goes all the way back to second grade. When you had a crush on Billy and all you could do was scribble his name surrounded by hearts in your duotang. Then your name beside it. Then it allllways came down to you testing out what your name would sound like . . . with Billy's last name attached to it.

Would you change your name after you got married?

I work in a place whose customer clientele are, for the resounding majority, female and married. But I also get to peek at their customer files and I realize that they more often than not share a different name than their spouse. It's become a huge deal lately (maybe  a trend?) for women to thrust themselves into married life on the independent foot. After all, isn't taking a man's name so anti-feminist? You aren't their property, after all! And say you're an only daughter. Don't you want to continue the family legacy of your surname?

But still. I grew up SUPER EXCITED to take my husband's name! I felt like trying a new name was like trying a new pair of shoes. And no matter how forward-thinking I find myself to be, I still think there is something poignant and romantic to changing your name. It's that little out-in-the-world expression that this person has become a part of you and the identity that you show the world.

Then there's hyphenation. It can get pretty unwieldy, especially if you have a long name. Even having two separate names can make things confusing when kids start coming into the mix. But aside from hyphenating, there ARE alternatives. Hell, even guys are opting to take their wives' names! Or couples are swapping. Geez!

So what do you think, all you kids out there in prairie land?

Your Daily Officiant

Back on with the officiating again! And I'm on a roll, let me tell you.

So ladies and gents - thinking about personalizing your wedding even further than you already have? Trying to cut a few costs while planning? (Which will be a saving grace once the time comes, believe me). Or maybe there's a special friend/family member you want to include in the ceremony that you can't already.

Well, how about having one of these elusive friends/family members officiate the wedding?

And the record screeches, the brakes are on. I know what most of you are thinking. "Is that even legal? Would that make my marriage even binding?" Well, if you'd just let me explain, maybe you'd find I'm not so out of my tree as you may think.

The Universal Life Church of Canada offers a legally binding and completely valid means of involving your best college football buddy or your best girlfriend from work in your wedding. They offer a free ordination package, which ordains you completely as a minister who can perform wedding ceremonies. And it's all online! Fancy that. What a world we live in for sure.

Personally, I think it's an epic idea. Especially for those who are considering a deeply personal, or non-denominational ceremony. (Don't worry; you can also get ordained for a day as a minister/officiant in your chosen faith should it be an issue!)
So what do you guys think about this idea? Tacky, fun, epic, ridiculous? If you want to contact them, check 'em out here!

A Night on the Terrace

Nestled amongst the trees of Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park, Terrace 55 specializes in Canadian Contemporary Cuisine. Ample windows and a glass ceiling allow diners too enjoy the seasonal menu offerings along with the well defined seasons that Manitoba is known for. Assiniboine Park is also internationally renowned for it's Zoo, The Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens, conservatory and art collections. The restaurant focuses on seasonal local, regional and national ingredients, which are highlighted with an emphasis on freshwater fish and seafood. The wine list is made up of many international vintages that really spotlight Canadian wines (a rarity at a lot of high-end cuisine locations!). Great food and wine coupled with an iconic location make it an incredible choice, especially for your wedding.

PART 1 - Reception

Taken from their 'WOW!' profile: "In keeping with our surroundings of beautiful Assiniboine Park, Terrace Fifty-Five will mirror the “greenness” of the park with a menu that will be representative of a regional cuisine . . . Our Chef has committed to use sustainable and renewable resources whenever possible. Manitoba products will be used extensively including local produce, pickerel, grains, bison and lamb."

But this is all fine and well for the hungry connoisseur of the everyday, but we are here for weddings. And what do they have to offer all you nearly-weds?

Well, if you take a look at their details on a wedding package, whether the function is large, formal, or informal, you have tons of options. Want to have it all in the Pavilion Room (which your bridal party can also use exclusively throughout the day)? Check! Or maybe your tastes long for the spacious open windows and elegant intimacy of the Rotation Gallery on the second floor? Or, even further, you'd love to dine and dance under the stars at the Atrium and Terrace patio? It's all possible here! (Geez, I'm just researching it now but I'm falling in love with this location!)

Appetite still not piqued? Check their lunch or dinner menu and salivate all over your keyboards!

But of COURSE this is not all!

PART 2 - Ceremony

Yes, I tricked you! You thought it was just a reception and event site, didn't you? Well, luckily for you, I'm here to let you know that you can also have your ceremony at Terrace 55! (If you plan on doing the reception here, that is). Whether on the Terrace or in the Rotation Gallery, you again have tons of options. But Assiniboine Park is so beautiful in the summer months, so why not take advantage of this gorgeous space and all it entails?
Oh my Lord, but look at that pond. I love this locations. Obviously suited for smaller weddings up to about 150, (same with the reception area, as you'll note on the room capacities for each) this is still a perfect place to tie it up in Winnipeg. And I think I speak for the majority of those living in the area who have often frequented this beloved park more than once!

So now that I've completely made you gaga, there are a few details I'm sure you're dying for. Like location, contact info, and open times. Book quite ahead though! The days fill up fast, especially during peak, flowery, green, summer season.

Where is it, pray tell?

Miss Bee's Big Day Question

Gonna make this a short one. Ladies, I want comments! Come on! I love asking these questions, and I love picking your brains, but there won't be a discussion without some comments. I can't be the one talking here all the time! That's what Monday's are for. Grousing and heckling and henpecking.

Now that I've got that off my chest, here's something I wanted to toss your way:

What do you think is the most important aspect of the 'wedding day'?

Maybe it's the dress, the champagne, the food, the ability to convene and reunite with family and friends that you love and hold so dear. Maybe it's not a 'thing', maybe it's just a moment. Maybe it's knowing your outdoor wedding hasn't been rained on. Maybe it's the anticipation of the fact that you are about to be paired up with the person you have loved for years. Or maybe the best part of the day is the END of the day, when you know the planning has gone off and you can sleep for the first time in months since the planning began.

Or maybe it's just the gigantic cake. That's also a pretty big deal.

Now remember guys, I want some talking! These Mondays are getting sad without at least one peck!

Miss Bee's Big Budget Question

Welcome to Monday! Ahh, I can handle Monday, as long as it's as sunny as it has been the past week! Spring has FINALLY decided to show it's face, and I refuse to have a bad case of the Mondays when it's warming up and the days are getting longer. I also refuse to believe it's going to rain tomorrow. REFUSE.

Moving on. Let's get to this week's question, shall we? And let's get right down to the point to, because I feel like my question posts have been getting too chatty!

Who Should Pay For The Wedding?

Ah, it's an eternal struggle. Traditionally it's been the parents who take on the fiscal responsibility of fueling your nuptials. But nowadays couples want to be independent of their parents, and see paying for their entire wedding as a symbol of committing the time as well as moolah to a prosperous marriage.

But alas! You approach your wedding with gleaming rose-coloured glasses, dreams of a hundred doves flying into the sunset and riding away in a horse drawn carriage all too palpable. But impossible unless you want to take out a loan or completely obliterate that nest egg you've been saving up for your first house. So your parents intervene! Or the groom's parents. Or some kind of Wedding Angel (c).

But then the logic/reason behind all your luxe wedding needs is brought into question. You want that 8 ft chocolate fountain but because either your or the groom's parents (or both) are footing the bill, they call the shots (and the chocolate fountain is shot down.) So, do you sacrifice the power for the moolah, or do you wait to get married for an extra year or two before you save up the money? And if the money is offered to you, ought you take it and run? Is it rude to refuse? Or ruder still to assume that your mom and pop, probably now retired, ought to pay out the nose for your four thousand dollar Vera Wang duds?

Talk to me prairie peeps!

Sunday Sunlight - A Few of My Favourite TOASTS

It's the send off from friends, family, and even random guests that always get me. Although, I mean, I've been to my fair share of weddings where the toasts have been . . . shall we say, less than planned, but they come from the heart and that's all that matters. And some, like the favourites I'm about to list, are epic quotes from literature or prominent figures that illustrate the aspects of love being celebrated at any wedding.

SO, here are a few of my favourite toasts/quotes that I've collected here and there! Hopefully they inspire you prairie brides (and grooms, and attendants) for when your time comes to raise the glass!

Sliocht sleachta ar shliocht bhur sleachta. (English translation: May your children's children have children)
Irish toast

The majority of husbands remind me of an orangutan trying to play the violin.
Honore de Balzac
Keep your eyes wide open before the wedding, half shut afterwards.
Benjamin Franklin

A good wife always forgives her husband when she's wrong.
Berle Milton

One should never take the easy road, but rather the right road, no matter how long the travel.
Scott Cerreta

You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.
Dr. Seuss

You can't blame gravity for falling in love.
Albert Einstein

I hold it true, whatever befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.
Lord Alfred Tennyson

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward in the same direction.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and blows up the bonfire.
Francois de La Rouchefoucauld

Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illumines it.
Martin Luther King

Miss Bee's Big Gay Marriage Question

Yes, this is a hot button topic. I realize. But because of that I expect a conversation to be sparked, guys! Help me out here.

To get right to the point, I am not against gay marriage. Those who are baffle and frighten me, but to each his own. I personally believe that everyone has the right to a marital union in the eyes of their state, province, or country, despite sexual orientation. I think for a society that claims such forward thinking open-mindedness to still be reserved in the slightest on the topic is a backward one. I think I want a just world that treats every human with fairness under the law, at the very least, so that when my children grow up, gay or straight, they'll feel safe in their love. Most importantly, I think that not all of you future Prairie Couples are strictly Bride & Groom limited. Nor should you feel you ever have to be. Ever.

Phew. That being said though, unfortunately, these are not the views of the majority. Or of those who control and mitigate the unions, primarily--the Justices of the Peace. But should it be up to them? Should they have all of that power, and allow themselves to be so swayed by their own beliefs and predilections that it should limit the opportunities for a well-rounded relationship between two people?

So I'm going to put it to you bluntly now and cease the rambling:

Should Justices of the Peace, or Any Wedding Officiant, Be Allowed to Refuse to Marry Gay Couples Based on Their Own Beliefs?

My lips are zipped. So talk to me!

Sunday Sunlight - Guestbook, Placement, & Favour Tables

Ahh, I love Sundays! Even though I have to work every single one, they always resonate as that fresh extension to what is probably a glorious, work-free weekend for all you normal people out there! Also just makes me think of Sunday brunch. Mmm, I could eat Sunday brunch all day every day! . . . now I want brunch, damn.
I digress! You didn't come here to listen to me quip about sweet, sweet bacon. Another time. Something else that's super fresh and glorious on my radar right now is what people are doing with their guestbook or seating arrangement tables! That's right, those big displays at the front that tell you where to sit, and also invite you to leave a note or piece of advice for the newly-wedded. Maybe you'll put your favours here, or an example of the menu? Who knows! These are all prime real estate for you DIY brides to show your stuff. I've seen typewriters, I've seen flags, I've seen scrabble pieces artfully glued together. But what about you? Found anything interesting in your own blog surfage? I've got a few here I think you'll like, and hopefully they'll give you some excellent ideas of your own. (I'm definitely having an antique typewriter at mine. It's written in stone now! No turning back!)

Garden of Earthly Delights

Ooh look at all the pretty colours, the fancy linens, the delicious food! Not to mention all of the Hummers you rented to ferry your bridal party from the ceremony to the reception. And all that paper that you consumed to bring the day together: save-the-dates, invites, place cards, guestbook. And on, and on. You probably don't realize it, but having a big wedding has an immense ecological footprint. There's a lot of waste and a lot of unnecessary consumption, but we're usually way too busy having a good time to notice.

Of late, thankfully, a lot of brides are planning their nuptials with specific attention to green alternatives. Giving baby trees as favours, using recycled paper for place cards, or making the flower arrangements from what grows in your mom's garden. All really great alternatives to be sure! And vendors are following attentively with their own epic means of satisfying green brides!

So where can you find something fresh, new, and awesome my little prairie brides?

You want your mind blown? Well my friend, you surely came to the right place today. Oh dear. I stumbled upon these guys while I was looking for Winnipeg invitation shops, and it popped up rather innocuously. Seemed like a place that would have some sweet designs for me to peruse on my lunch break.
Sweet is an understatement.

This is probably one of the greenest invitation initiatives I've ever seen, AND it's Winnipeg-grown! (Oh lord how I will be pun-ished for that one). To get down to the basics, Botanical PaperWorks uses printable seed paper, a product they've developed that, when planted, composts away leaving wildflowers behind! Some classics you'll behold are Bird's Eye, Black Eyed Susans, Snap Dragons and more! (SWOON!) The secret is in the seed-embedded paper, which is mainly collected post-consumer waste from businesses and schools. This act itself saves local landfills 10 tonnes of paper per year. That's definitely not just peanuts.

Oh dear. This is something that has caught my heart very quickly. Because not only is it incredible ingenius and romantic, the entire company has a strong Eco Commitment mantra which applies to all of their products, including the wrapping the products come in (biodegradable, compostable corn plastic). They've also reduced their use of office paper, are members of the Green Hotel association, and many of the team members volunteer in local schools and non-profit groups to teach the three Rs to the young folk.
SO. What does all this super amazing stuff have to do with weddings, I hear you quivering? Well let's see! They offer a wide collection of invitations, wedding favours, thank you cards, place cards, and even confetti! You can also purchase the paper on its own and print out your unique design at home. And even aside from wedding stationery, they carry other promotional items (journals, post cards, calendars, business cards!) and gifts. Check check check itttt! Shop online or in store, whatever you fancy.

Instructions for planting your seed paper are here, along with a few delicious pics of customer-results! Any other questions, you can definitely hit up their very helpful FAQ. How are you not rushing to pay them a visit?! If I were you I'd be jumping in my '92 Grand Am and be jetting it down there faster than you can say biodegrade! All in the name of green, prairie brides. After all, you want to keep those wheat fields lush!
