Makeup Magic

Image (c) Makeup Geek
So it's come down to this: either your guests have to bring their own napkins to your wedding, or you hire that awesome air-brushing makeup artist to do your wedding day face. Yeah, that's what I thought too, Grandma MiMi can wipe her mouth on the table cloth.

I kid. But truly, budget is an issue for a ton of brides and grooms out there. Sometimes you can't have it all! So if you've decided to skip out on the spa-like treatments of hair, makeup, and nails in favour of chairs so your guests don't have to squat at dinner-- then you're a DIY-er and Makeup Geek can help!

This website is pro, I kid you not. They have tutorial videos for almost any type of makeup you want to learn how to achieve. Their wedding-day video is really great. Take a gander!

Here are a few other tutorials that aren't specifically wedding related, but still appropriate for nuptials!

You Crafty Minx

Some are gifted. They can cut, sew, glue, glitter, pin and primp! And some are less than talented at crafting... anything. Never fear! Don't think just because you don't have a subscription to Martha Stewart Living, PVR the DIY channel or have a personal relationship with everyone who works at Michaels, that you too can't craft worth a dime.

If you are feeling like you have to tighten the belt on your wedding budget, why not make some hand-crafted favours for your guests? Or even make some of your own table centres? Don't feel like these are a daunting undertaking. Well, if your guestlist is in the 200s you might want to garner a crew of helpers unless you are Martha herself.

I've rounded up a big ol' bag of ideas right here for you Prairie Brides looking to try something crafty!

Votive Candles

I thought this idea from Michaels was a great way to showcase some crafty-talent (or not so talent!). Pick out candles that coordinate with your wedding colours, and wrap the base with fun or pretty craft paper! To hold the paper in place, use push pins or even a brooch. Ribbon or tulle finishes off a really easy and really beautiful centre piece or favour!

Custom Candy Boxes

Another idea from Michaels that I really liked. Fill acrylic boxes with a candy (or any favour) of your choice and wrap with ribbon. Finish it with some glued on rhinestones, or make a cute box with leftover ribbon or material scraps!

Tea Bag Favours

Had to go to the Guru for this one, Martha Stewart. Cute idea that even the least-craftiest of us can accomplish! Pick out a tea blend that you and your fiancee enjoy and create custom tags for your wedding guests! Though as one commenter noted, you would definitely want a non-toxic ink for this. Unless of course... you want someone 'taken care of'. You know what I mean, don't play coy.

Floating Flowers, Candles, you name it!

An easy and completely beautiful way to highlight your tables. Small dollar store brandy glasses or candle holders filled with water and topped with a floating candle or flower, or even petals. For something different try placing a few pieces of coloured glass or beads in the bottom of the glass first!

There are a lot more craft ideas out there that can help a budget-couple fit everything in to the wedding of their dreams!

DIY Boudoir Photoshoot

Courtesy of Scout Magazine
Well ladies, let's get down to brass tax here (if the photo didn't do that already) - while your wedding will be a show of elegance or romance, and you'll be spending the day putting your love center stage for your assorted friends and family, there are some other things you can do to keep it interesting . . . not in front of your family though. Grandma doesn't need that at age 92. (Or she might be a firecracker, who knows).

Prenuptial boudoir photoshoots have become an increasingly popular trend these days, along the same vein as pole dancing lessons with the ladies has become an acceptable option for a fun night out. Why, though? Seems kind of out of left field, but let's take stock. Who doesn't want to show their husband-to-be what they've got to look forward to the rest of their lives? It's like a bachelor party starring you that only they're invited to. The photos will last a lifetime, the same way your wedding day photos will, and let's face it: it's an amazing confidence boost to go all out and be your sexiest for the man you love.

But a lot of girls (like me) either can't or aren't willing to tack a second photoshoot (if you did engagement shots, then make that a third) onto their already ballooned wedding budget. But never fear! It is very easy to get the same quality and genuine sexiness by doing your photoshoot with one special person who knows your assets best - YOU.

So here are some helpful tips to creating a successful DIY boudoir photoshoot right in your own boudoir! You will only need two things for this assignment: one, your sexy self, and two, a digital camera with a timer.

Tip 1: Set Up Your Space

Photo copyright Charlie Gillespie-Rodie
So most important, where will your shoot take place? Bedroom? Bathroom? Basement? Livingroom? Set it up with a few key embellishments like throws, pillows, rugs, etc. The mood that you want to create will, first and foremost, be established by where you're located. Although you're the focus, you don't want your surroundings to detract. If you're trying to go for a sexy vintage look and you have a huge Jonas Bros. poster in the background, I don't think the end result will bode well. But if you're looking for, say, a toussled bedroom theme, then go all out! Mess up those sheets, roll around artistically. You know the drill. But most of all, make sure the environment of the shoot reflects you.

Tip 2: Establish Your Character
Photo copyright Laura Meyer Photography

So this theatre talk really translates to - who do you want to be on this shoot? Feisty firecracker? Demure maiden? Vintage buxom beauty? What you wear, how you do your hair, and all of your accessories are going to reflect this. Go all out when choosing your style and wardrobe! You can wear as much, or as little, as you see fit to really illustrate your theme. It's also like treating yourself to a spa/beauty day. Plan it from your hair to your shoes to the lace on that sexy thong. Ready for your close up?

Tip 3: Camera Placement

Now, I will admit that, as anniversary gifts and such for my boyfriend, I've taken my fair share of 'personal' photos, and this tip is important. Where you're going to place your camera is vital to capturing the full extent of your artistic intentions. Now, what do I mean by this? Simply put, you need to put that camera somewhere so that it is aimed directly at what you're intending to photograph. If you have a tripod, even better. For those of us who are impoverished but still well intentioned, I pull out my dresser and make a tower of books until the camera is high enough to accommodate all of the space I wish to capture. This is where a viewfinder is a godsend, because you can keep adjusting based on what you're seeing there. Take a few test shots to see if you need to zoom in or pull out just enough. Takes some fiddling, but it's worth it.

Tip 4: Dramatic Lighting, Anyone?

As I said earlier, you know yourself best, and since social networking has taken over, we all know what light suits us best in photos (especially while trolling through pics from your friends parties, and so on). Are you paler? Do you get washed out easily with the flash? Do you better suit natural light? Before taking any of the final pictures, do a few test runs with the varying settings on your digital camera to see what works best. If you need more focal lighting, remember that lamps are your friend. Again, when you bring them into the space, test out to see what needs brightening or toning down, both subject and environment wise. It can take a bit of time and fine tuning, but the end result will definitely be worth it.

Tip 5: Snap Snap Snap!

Take as many photos as your snapping finger will allow! In fact, even when it gets tired, take ten more. The point is that in the end, you're going to be deleting quite a few, but when that's all done, you will still have tons to choose from for your final album. That being said, also make sure to stay fresh and fun, and try out a variety of poses (naughty, nice, discreet!) - especially those poses you aren't usually comfortable with. You'll really surprise yourself when you review the photos afterward and some of what you consider to be 'awkward' poses turn out really sexalicious.

And if you're still hesitant about the outcome of such a wild day, remember that every time you look into that camera, you're looking right into your man's eye, and that'll definitely give you the energy to keep rockin' it. Stay positive knowing that this shoot will a) make him feel like the luckiest guy on earth and b) pump the both of you up about your big day even more so than before.

It's also a good excuse to go out and buy new lingerie, isn't it?

Moments that Matter

mmm delicious
We've all heard of M&Ms, they're nothing new. They taste like magic and they are a part of (almost) everyone's childhood. (Yeah I'm looking at you. Yeah you, the one who used to pick the peanuts out of the centre...)

Lately M&Ms have been acting more 'grownup' then ever. Even working as wedding favours! That's right! Customizable M&Ms have been around for a while, but it's just recently become a more popular wedding favour.

All you have to do is make yourself an account on MyM&Ms and they'll help you get started in the easy process of making your very own wedding candies! WHAT! Below are the screen caps I took as I tinkered about with the many different colours, and images.

First you go about selecting from that big ol' wheel of colours! (As you can see I've already gone ape on the creator).

Then they give you the option to add words, premade clipart or hey! upload your own image! (As I've done on the far right hand there).

The final step is choosing form the array of packaging! I like the silver tins, I think they're classy. (As classy as candy can be haha).

Here is a more classic 'wedding' type package they offer.

(And what I made with it)

They now have 'sparkly' colours like the image on the right. Gold, platinum and silver!

Ooohhh fancy!

Oh yeah, if Ewan McGregor ever wants to marry me... I've already made the wedding favours.

Broochalicious

I've been seeing the trend of brooch bouquets quite a bit lately! It's become pretty popular as the new wave of DIY vintage wedding stuff flows in, and I'm really digging it. First of all, it's something you can make yourself, which adds to the unique and special flavour of your wedding's 'identity'. You're never going to see the same brooch bouquet twice either, let me tell you.

Also adding to the personal flair, a lot of brides are opting to put, say, their grandmother's/mother's/great aunt's old brooches together, which is a great use for them if they've just been collecting dust or edging closer to the Good Will bin. This is also a great twist on using faux flowers in lieu of live ones.

That being said, there's also the really neat option of mixing your glass/ceramic brooches with real flowers to still give it that elegant touch (really digging on the peonies and feathers here!)

Another great plus to this versatile spin on faux flowers is that this bouquet won't wilt or die (with the exception of the added live flowers of course). Instead of throwing it out at the end of the day or drying it behind a china cabinet forever, this is a physical memory of your special day that you can always take out and admire. This is definitely something I'd consider for my wedding!
